Challenges and Controversies of Alternative Assessment

 

- Impose licensing standards that require teachers to be competent in assessment in order to practice.

- Adequate training for preservice teachers to assess accurately.

- Prepare principals to provide proper supervision of and leadership in classroom assessment

- Invest in the ongoing professional development needed to ensure accurate classroom assessment. Stiggins, 1999

- Consistency in marking is achieved through shared values, meanings and understandings of the markers.

- Decision to award is made by more than one experts (Maclellan, 2004).

- Educators want and need information on additional types of achievement – How do we assess students’ ability to communicate, cooperate, perform (Stiggins, 1999).

- Challenge is to align our various assessment options with the board array of achievement targets we value – we must learn to match target with method (Stiggins, 1999).
