Challenges and Controversies of Alternative Assessment

- Transition remains controversial to educators and parent.

- Challenging teachers’ authority or a tiresome exercise that only results in "information overload."

- Teacher and students who are socialized into traditional assessment practices deal with this change (Dysthe, 2004).

- Accountability- theoretically grounded and quality secured or may be sweep away and bring the new learning culture with it (Dysthe, 2004).

- The higher the stakes, the greater the expertise we must bring to bear to create psychometrically sound assessments -standards of test quality we must adhere are clear and nonnegotiable (Stiggins 1999).

- Equity –everyone involved in educating students must ensure fairness. Need strong supporting systems for new forms of assessment or will magnify educational inequities (Winking, 1997).
