Disadvantages of Alternative Assessment

We are very surprise that when we find out more about alternative assessments, there are tremendous amount of very negative views on this type of assessment. Let us highlight a few important ones. Firstly, alternative assessment in particular performance based for example indicates that somewhere between 8 to 16 trials of student performance may be necessary in order to obtain a reliable judgment. There is also difficulties in getting a comparative data as compared to standardised testing which reduces subjectivity in assessment and adds credibility. In terms of task specification like procedural, conditional and declarative knowledge, alternative assessment allows student choice and negotiation and can find manifestation in range of heterogeneous devices therefore, it is not difficult for irrelevant variables to be used in making judgments about achievement (Maclellan, 2004). On top of that ensuring that assessment task elicits the skills underlying the performance in the domain of interest to validate the task may be difficult to some educators. There is high possibility of confusion when one interprete performance assessment when it comes to constructing knowledge, skills or other attributes that need to be assessed based on the tasks and the  development of the scoring procedures (Maclellan, 2004)
