Abstract

This presentation will review Social Studies assessment in today’s schools and offer possible alternative assessment modes that can be used to enhance Social Studies teaching and learning. The presentation will look into current objectives of Social Studies and the assessment modes used to evaluate students’ learning. We will also be focusing on whether there is a need to change this traditional assessment mode in the context on whether it prepares our students for the challenges and demands of the 21st century workforce. If the current Social Studies assessment mode shortchanges our students’ preparation in facing 21st century challenges and demands, how then can alternative assessment better prepare our students for these types of demands and be an active and responsible citizen that will benefit Singapore in the long run? In order to look into this aspect, we hope to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of both traditional and alternative modes of assessments. Finally, we will look into whether these alternative assessments are applicable to the Singapore context. What are the challenges and controversies that will arise if we choose to adopt these alternative modes of assessment? Finally, we will be offering recommendations on how to make these alternative modes of assessment work to enhance quality teaching and learning in Social Studies.
